The perfect way to see Shetland! Board the Swan on Friday afternoon, and after a safety briefing set off on a short passage to spend the night at anchor in the picturesque Aithvoe in the north of the island of Bressay. Get to know your crewmates over dinner and perhaps an anchor dram before turning in for a good night’s sleep.
The Swan is a sail training vessel, and as such, you will take your turn on the helm, adjusting sails and doing safety checks, and you will help out with domestic tasks such as cooking and cleaning. Everyone mucks in, from skipper to first-timer, and from the most to the least experienced. This is what will give you a strong sense of accomplishment and achievement – you are part of what makes your voyage happen, and your efforts will have a positive effect on the rest of the crew onboard.
Saturday will begin with a hearty breakfast; you will need your strength for all the halyard hauling you’re about to do. With the sails raised (weather conditions will dictate how many of the Swan’s 4 sails will be hoisted), enjoy your trip to Out Skerries., skirting the Stepping Stones, the Hogo Baas, Rumble Holm and Grif Skerry. You will tie up at the pier in Bruray, Out Skerries, for an evening of relaxation and exploring.
A visit in the dinghy across the harbour to Grunay is an experience not to be missed; the old shore station which at one point serviced the beautiful lighthouse lies derelict and abandoned, a provocative and eerie insight into a life gone by.
On Sunday, you will once more put your muscles to good use hoisting the sails, then make your return voyage to Lerwick, perhaps taking a chance to pop into Symbister in Whalsay, or hug the mainland east coast for a closer view of Hevda Skerry, Hoo Stack, and the Brethren. You will disembark in the late afternoon.
