Board Swan in Walls where your day will begin with a comprehensive safety briefing including how to work the lines on deck and set the sails. We will then slip lines and head out past the isles of Linga and Vaila whilst hoisting sails.
From there it’s a pretty sail to Foula, which lies a little south-west of Walls, around 15 nautical miles from the Shetland mainland.
Sailing around Foula you will see spectacular cliffs and wildlife, including breath taking views of Da Kame, Britain's second highest sea cliff, which stands at a staggering 1200 feet, on the West side of the island. These cliffs really are a sight to behold.
A lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served before making your return to Walls, disembarking around 17:00.
You will take an active part in sailing the Swan, including hauling on ropes, taking a turn on the helm, and keeping a lookout. No previous sailing experience is needed, just a willingness to learn, participate and enjoy.
Please note: You may need to board and/or disembark the Swan via a vertical pier ladder. Ensure you wear sensible footwear, with good grips, and warm clothing, and don't forget your binoculars and camera to catch all the wildlife on offer.

Ahoy there – Join the Swan for Summer 2027! Shetland’s own Tall Ship, Swan, has an exciting opportunity for a qualified Skipper to join us for the 2027 summer season. This will offer a fantastic experience sailing round Shetland, North East Scotland, and international journeys to the Faroe Islands. The role would suit a someone keen on adventure who understands the importance and value of sail training to our younger sailors, and the quality of experience for our public sailing trips.
