Est. Nautical Miles

Foula is Shetland’s most isolated community, lying around 15 nautical miles from the Shetland mainland. You will join the Swan in the picturesque village of Walls, situated on the westside of Shetland, and after a safety briefing cast the lines and head out past Linga and Vaila before hoisting sails. From there it’s a pretty uncomplicated sail to Foula, which lies a little south-west of Walls.

If the weather is favourable, the Swan will either drop anchor and you can take a trip into Foula in the dinghy, or she might tie up alongside where you will be able to get off and stretch your legs.

One of Foula’s highlights is the Sneck o’ da Smallie, a deep rock-cleft on the south-west coast of Foula, which you may have time to explore.

Should the weather be unfavourable for a trip ashore, you will be well compensated by a trip round the west side of Foula, where you will be treated to breathtaking views of the sheer 1200 feet Kame, Britain’s second highest sea cliff.

A lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served before making your return to Walls.

You will take an active part in sailing the Swan, including hauling on ropes, taking a turn on the helm, and keeping a lookout.

Included in voyage

  • Lunch, tea, coffee and biscuits.
  • Life jacket and safety line.
  • There are basic waterproofs onboard, however you may feel more comfortable in your own wet weather gear.
