  • Swan Trust Receives Funding Boost From Shetland Charitable Trust

10 July 2020

The Swan Trust is among 16 charitable organisations which have collectively received over half a million pounds from the Shetland Charitable Trust, with the Swan Trust receiving £14,000. This funding will be used to ready The Swan to offer life changing sail training opportunities in 2021.

Swan Trust Chairman, David Goodlad, said “Trustees would like to thank the Charitable Trust for this funding. The Swan Trust offers a range of volunteering and sailing opportunities to our community, which can increase skills and confidence, contribute to health and wellbeing and build friendships and community links. This funding will enable The Trust to certify The Swan for the 2021 season, and offer life changing sail training opportunities, especially for our young people.

The Shetland Charitable Trust is a charity set up to benefit the people of Shetland, especially in the areas of: Social care and welfare; Arts, culture, sport and recreation; and the environment, natural history and heritage. First and foremost, The Swan is a community asset which brings people together, whether on a sailing trip, through volunteering opportunities or community events and projects.

With a particular focus on enabling youth sail training , The Swan Trust connects with schools, sail training and youth organisations, and undertakes a range of youth sails every year. The Trust also develops the skills of its volunteer base, and works with partner organisations to enhance community events and funding bids for youth, community and other projects.

Sail training goes far beyond sailing instruction, it uses the experience of being at sea to help people learn about themselves and discover hidden strengths and talents. Sail trainees reap the benefits through increased self-confidence, independence, team working, communication skills and testing their personal and physical boundaries.

To date they have raised funds to replace the Jib and Mainsail from a variety of sources, including Historic Environment Scotland, Scottish Fishermen's Trust, The Shetland Fishing Fleet, Grieg Seafood and People's Postcode Lottery. They have also secured partial funding for the Staysail, and are looking to fund the balance.
