Crew and Trustees of Swan were delighted to welcome representatives from Serco NorthLink on board yesterday to see the new main mast, sponsored by the company, in action.
Twelve representatives from Serco NorthLink were greeted by Trustees Mary Irvine, Brian Wishart and Shayne Mcleod on boarding Swan for a day sailing yesterday.
Crew members Scott Sandison and Shona Coull were on hand to provide a full safey briefing and sailing instruction as the group left Scalloway Boating Club for a cruise around the isles and west coastline.
Mr Wishart said the conditions were perfect for the group who were enthusiastic in their participation. After a short cruise, the group had lunch on board and returned to the berth.
In November 2024, Serco NorthLink provided funding for a new main mast, which was fitted in Ullapool by Isle Ewe Boats Ltd, from Isle of Ewe, partnering with Johnson and Loftus, who are based in Ullapool. This replaced the original mast fitted in the early 1990s as part of the full refurbishment of Swan, prior to starting her new lease of life as a sail training ship.
The mast replaement was a significant investment for the boat and ensures the integrity of the main mast for another 25+ years. Videos were produced of the progress of the replacemet project and can be seen on our YouTube channel.
