The Swan Trust has delivered a series of youth sail training taster days around the northern and western isles to build excitement among young people ahead of The Tall Ships Races returning to Shetland in 2023. Taking place in Shetland, Orkney, Ullapool and Stornoway, the training events saw over 100 young people enjoy a day aboard Shetland’s own tall ship, Swan.

The Swan is going back to her roots with a trip dedicated to fishing and seafood. Sailing from Uyeasound, in Unst, the trip will visit some of the best fishing grounds around the North Isles and everyone aboard will be responsible for catching the seafood to be enjoyed over the weekend.

Celebrating Wordplay 2022, The Swan Trust is offering a literary evening aboard the Swan in September, with a traditional dish of bacalao made by local food expert and author Marian Armitage, readings from John Goodlad’s new book The Salt Roads – How fish created a culture, and traditional music by Swan Skipper Maggie Adamson.

The crew of the Swan, LK243, have received excellent feedback from the teachers and pupils of the Bells Brae and Sound Primary Schools. Primary seven pupils from both schools came aboard over 5 days in May for half day sailing trips, learning about life aboard, how to set sails, tie knots, steer the ship and the history of Swan.

Shetland’s traditional tall ship Swan, LK243, is scheduled to arrive in the Western Isles this week, for a month of youth sail training and public trips around the isles. The sail training taster days will highlight opportunities for taking part in The Tall Ships Races which is returning to Scotland in 2023. While the seven- and nine-night public trips, leaving from Ullapool and Stornoway, will explore the Western Isles, including St Kilda.

The Swan Trust is to offer a ladies only trip later in the year, with an all-female crew. The weekend trip will take place in September, exploring the east side of Shetland, and will be the first time the Swan has been crewed exclusively by women.
